Flood Insurance

Flooding in Florida is a serious risk due to its proximity to water and the state’s geography, so no matter if you are on the coast or more inland, you may want to consider a flood policy.

Flooding is not typically covered under a home insurance policy, so a separate policy needs to be purchased. Depending on your location, you may even be required to have flood insurance to get your mortgage. If you don’t have flood insurance, you may not receive federal assistance unless the event is declared a federal emergency. Even then, these disaster grants aren’t usually enough money to fully cover costs, and floods can easily cause more damage. If you want financial protection after a flood, storm surge, or wind-driven water, you need to consider a flood insurance policy, or you will have to pay out of pocket for any damages.

What Is Covered Under Flood Insurance?

You can purchase coverage for both your property and its contents. It’s best to purchase both. The property coverage protects your plumbing and electrical systems, water heaters, furnaces and sump pumps, built-in appliances, permanently installed carpeting, blinds, permanently installed bookcases, cabinets, or paneling, and the foundation. Personal property coverage can include furniture, electronics, curtains, portable dishwashers and microwaves, washers and dryers, carpets that aren’t included in-building coverage, food freezers, and certain valuable items. Flood insurance won’t kick in until 30 days after you purchase the policy, so be sure to have it in place before a big storm is set to hit.

Getting Flood Insurance

You can get NFIP flood insurance through most insurers in Florida, including Accesspoint Insurance in Boca Raton, FL. The state has also made it even easier for companies to offer private flood insurance as alternatives to NFIP policies. There are some differences between the two types of policies, so be sure to speak with an agent about what is best for your situation.
